Earlier last week we were utterly horrified when a man brought his Leopard gecko to our shop because it wouldnt eat.
Take one look at the following photographs and you will see why. This poor little mite was in obvious distress. It couldnt see as it had numerous layers of skin stuck to its eyes. Could barely walk due to up tp 6 layers of unshed skin on its feet constricting toes and feet, exacerbated by early signs and symptoms of metabolic bone disease and by weakness caused by reduced intake of nutrition and fluids. Its mouth was covered in sores and bone dry, poor little thing was soo thirsty. It was also making noises associated with respiratory infection.
Not surprisingly we took it in to give care until the vet could see it this morning, we managed a brief chat with our vet within 30 minutes and followed his instructions until he could see the gecko this morning.
The skin was pretty easy to remove following a soak, but there is some damage to toes and eyes. It readly drank critical care dropped onto its tongue and took a few mls of water straight away. It chose to lie in its water bowl in its temporary basic set up - I suspect trying to drink more.
On examination by our vet it was found to have an ear infection, respiratory tract infection, be dehydrated, have mouth rot and suspected metabolic bone disease aswell as swelling arond its eyes - the extent of eye damage will be determined as treatment progresses . At least it is finally recieving vet treatment and it will remain in our care whilst recovering
It appears this guy bought the Leo off someone he knew and trusted the information he was given at the time! We didnt want to send him away to a vets with the gecko just in case he actually didnt take it to a vet, as when told it required veterinary treatment he replied "are you sure?". The man has returned the following day and is apparently trying to find the money for vets bills and wants us to teach him how to care for the Leopard gecko properly!!!!! But he hasnt returned or rang since that day!! Words cannot express how I feel!

Since being taken into our care it has recieved regular treatment from our vet and nursing care mainly by me. It has recieved antibiotics, anti inflamatories, liquid supplements fortified with multivitamins and various other necessary elements.
Im not too happy with her today. I popped in to give her fluids and supplements, but she just wasnt interested. Whether thats because she was so thirsty from being dehydrated earlier this week and now she just isnt thirsty, Im not sure. Her eyes looked worse today to me anyway, Ive applied viscotears to moisten them and will take her to the vets tomorrow to see what he thinks. Her head doesnt look right to me today, Im unsure if she is slightly more swollen around the eyes leaving them less defined. I will see what the vet thinks. She took two wax worms yesterday and one the previous day, but I didnt want to push it today as she didnt seem to want to be disturbed at all, at least she has had fluids and supplements.
Her mouth looks good, which is something I suppose. But overall I feel she isnt so good today, something I cant quite put my finger on. I will let you know how she is tomorrow.
I will post updates.
