I'm curious as to whether anyone on here has been bitten and noticed any symptoms other than the usual 'tingling sensation' in the bite area. The most noticable in terms of envenomation for me was a bite by B. Pulverulenta, but I only noticed that the tingling lasted longer than bites I had recieved from other species. I have had a few bites from large Mangroves, but noticed no symptoms I could readily attribute to the bite. I have also gotten quite a few bites from both B. Cynodon and B. Nigriceps (multiple animals) with not even the requisite tingliness.... I'd love to hear anyone elses experiences if they'd like to share. -G

I have been keeping Boiga's and other more dangerous venomous snakes now for at least 3 years. I have only ones had a close encounter with a mangrove snake. To be honest with you, I handle my boiga's in an easier way then forexample vipers or cobra's, but I never take any chances. Especially when you have been bitten before there is a chance that you get an allergic reaction. I know a guy who was bitten in the dumb and had symptoms up to his shoulder. It just a matter of time before you get bittten in such a way that at least one of the fangs will inject venom directly into a vein an hold on for at least a few seconds. Trust me: then you will have your symptoms.. Kind regards, Jelmer

The only reaction I have had was from a baby dendrophila, A burning sensation followed by a bit of numbness up to the elbow which lasted for a few hours. ;D
I just maintain that you should handle rear fangs with a certain amount of respect because one day it just might tag you and you get a full belt from it's venom.

Hi Ive only experienced one bite by a Boiga where its actually had a chance to get its rear fangs into me and that was by a juvenile B nigriceps. It held onto my finger for 30-60 seconds and was most difficult to remove without injuring the snake. There was swelling immediately, with red to purple discolouration in the surrounding inch or so of the finger. There was a burning/stinging type of pain which I found quite intense for such a tiny wound and have never experienced this rom any other snake bite previously. THe pain lasted aproximately 2 hours. I too believe that Boiga should be handled with care, its is known that children and elderly have died as a result of a bite from a Boiga ( irregularis I believe). To me that suggsts that anyone with a compromised immune system maybe more susceptible to the effects of their venom. I do have a compromised immune system and will continue to handle mine with great care. This is one group of snakes that I do not allow my daughter to interact with either.

I've only been bitten once by a young B.cyanea. It didn't chew and I felt nothing. No effects at all. I too believe that Boiga should be handled with care, its is known that children and elderly have died as a result of a bite from a Boiga ( irregularis I believe). I totally agree with you that Boiga should be handled with great care. One specie more than the other, but still... Do you have an article or something that writes about this death by a Boiga? I've never seen or read any confirmation of anyone dying from a Boiga-bite. Chris
