Gehyra Vorax
Background
Gehyra vorax can be found in Indonesia, on various islands such as Papau New Guinea, Fiji and Tonga. Here they inhabit a wide variety of places including mangrove forests, lowland forests and are often found around buildings.
At one time, Gehyra vorax was considered a source of food for people living on the smaller islands of the south Pacific Ocean
Temperment
Gehyra are fairly shy geckos and usually hide when approached. They can become stressed easily when handled and great care must be taken id doing so as their skin is extremely fragile and easily torn. beware that they can and will bite, especially if not used to being handled. A bite can be quite nasty as they have powerful jaws. But, some specimens do become tolerant of handling with time.
These are very fast geckos and great care must be exercised to prevent them escaping on opening their enclosure.
Housing
These geckos are arboreal and require a decent sized arboreal enclosure, aim for 36" high x 24" wide and 18" deep as a minimum size. Fill the vivarium with sturdy branches and plants, aim for decor which will hold their weight as they are rather chunky. Live plants will help to maintain humidity. Glass or fibre glass vivariums with good ventilation would both be suitable materials and would withstand the heavy spraying and high humidity required.
Substrates which help maintain humidity are suggested, such as rain forest , or orchid bark, moss, peat, coco fibre.
Feeding
There is contradictory information regarding feeding on the www, whilst some believe them to be carnivores, I have found this not to be the case. Out of a group of 10, all of ours consume large amounts of fruit, whilst also eating various livefoods. Food should be dusted with supplements 2 - 3 times weekly or more frequently for juveniles or breeding females
Temperature and humidity
As they originate from humid tropical forests, then there captive enviroment should mimic those climates. So aim for temperatures ranging from 80-85F in the warmer area through the day, with background ambient temperatures of 75-80F. Spray heavily once daily to keep humidity high. Use a thermostat to control which ever heating device you use and a guard to stop yourgeckos from burning themselves.
